Mat Marucci is a well-known and respected performer and educator. He has performed with Jimmy Smith, Buddy De Franco, Les McCann, John Tchicai, among many others. As a drummer, his recordings have been popular, and well-received critically. Marucci has authored several books on drumming, and this is one of his finest. Samples of his playing can be heard at www.cdbaby.com Drum Rudiments: A Simple Approach contains an insightful introduction to drumming and seven lessons. Each lesson is complete, accurate, and a genuine learning experience. Essentially, this is a book for viewing, and the notes and material employed will be interesting for any person learning to drum. For instance, Lesson 6 discusses and illustrates the Flam and Drag, and degrees of technical difficulty associated with each. Two examples of triple stroke roll are illustrated in clear notation. Drum Rudiments: A Simple Approach is a short, concise work. Yet, it has all the information any beginning drummer needs to get started. Excellent instructional method. | 15-Minute Warm-Ups For Drums Muzik Etc, March/April 2001 Reminds me of the books you used to see with names such as "Pocket Pal" or "Midget's Guide to Rudiments" (?) They were manuals to go - books you could fit in a coat pocket. Mat has gone a step further in this little compendium of warm-up exercises: he has included a CD on which he plays each exercise and narrates in a casual, teacher-like fashion. Most of us have encountered one or more of the exercises Mat lays out in this book. It's really handy to have them all in one place. Billed as warm-up exercises, they're also great chop builders. T.
